She was human.
She was female.
She had emotions.
Emotions which consumed her human mind.
She watched from afar as the raindrops interrupted her senses.
Far from what she had expected, she saw the very captain of the football team – the first African-American captain in her school – walk up to her.
Holding tight to his vaserty jacket, he held out an umbrella over her head.
Her eyes timidly looked up to his.
He didn’t have a smile on at all but his gesture was enough for her to feel like chalk and cheese.
Her hand wavered as she contemplated what next to do.
“You don’t want?” The boy asked. Biodun Adedeji.
“Oh,” She immediately understood that he referred to the umbrella and she took it from him. “Thank you.”
She noticed he now stood under the rain without anything but she didn’t have the guts to say a word.
Her palms suddenly felt sweaty despite the cold in the atmosphere.
She was stuck on words to say.
Her brain couldn’t even compose a correct statement.
All that rung in her head was ‘Darn it, Biodun Adedeji is talking to me. I hope I don’t make a fool out of myself.’
“Hi, I’m Abiodun,” He stretched out his hand for a handshake. “You are?”
Her brain wavered as she said, “Nervous.”
For the first time in their interaction, a smile formed on the face of Biodun Adedeji.
“I mean I’m Venus. My friends prefer calling me Vi or they sometimes make some jokes and call me Mars or Skittles but Venus is actually my name and yeah… I think I’m just ranting and selling myself out of how nervous I am right now.” Her voice became timid as she bent her head down, a little embarrassed.
His smile grew even wider as he dropped his outstretched hand. “Yeah, I guess that’s cool. I was as well nervous before walking up to you.”
She looked up at him with her cheeks blushed and her face flushed.
“I have a game tonight and I’m not sure how well it’s going to go so I was nervous about that.”
“Oh,” Her face fell. “Well, we haven’t gotten any formation for the game tonight so I was and still am nervous about that.” That was the first lie that came to her head. “I’m a cheerleader.” She quickly added for better clarification.
That bit, wasn’t a lie.
He cocked his head to the side with his smile still in place. “Yeah, I’ve seen you a ton of times. You’re pretty good.”
Her blush came back. “Umm, thanks. You’re not bad yourself.”
His face changed.
“I mean with football. I’ve seen you play on the field. You’re really good. Uhm..” She tucked her hair behind her hair and bit her lip as she looked down.
“I see you’re really nervous,” He chuckled.
She looked at him, more flushed than normal.
“About the game, that is. Let me treat you,” He smiled ever gently at her. “It’ll ease you up a bit before the game.”
She smiled too really hoping that he knew the main reason she was nervous was because of him as she took his offer.
“Sounds awesome, I guess.”
The two left and Venus felt the need to pull out from the pressure he was causing her but then, there was also an ounce of excitement to the nervousness she felt.
Something inside her wanted the nervousness never to go away.
